Student Perspective: Alternative Winter Break Offers Opportunity to Have An Impact

Oswego Endowment Continues to Outperform Industry Average
Bucking the national trend, the latest endowment report for SUNY Oswego shows a gain of 1 percent for the past fiscal year, which is 2.9 percent higher than the average return of -1.9 percent nationally, according to the 2016 National Association of College and University Business Officers-Commonfund Study of Endowments.

Recent Alumna Shares Self-Promotion Tips through OAA Webinar
Approximately 20 members of the college community received suggestions on how to market themselves in a free webinar hosted by the Oswego Alumni Association. Cydni Williams ’13, who graduated with degrees in marketing and graphic design and now works as channel marketing manager at Facebook, presented “Marketing Yourself in Your Career,” the most recent installment of the Lunch and Learn webinar series.

SUNY Oswego’s recently opened herbarium features more than 50,000 dried and mounted plant specimens in a historically significant collection that links the main campus’ scientific education and research mission with that of Rice Creek Field Station.

SUNY Oswego’s Longest Participant in the Annual Torchlight Ceremony, Maynard J. Lonis, Dies at 97
Maynard J. Lonis ’40 M’51 of Phoenix, N.Y., was a member of the first class to raise a candle in unison with the lighting of the Torch of Learning in 1936 - the year the ceremony is believed to have been instituted. He died Jan. 11 at the age of 97.

Laker Men Go 1-1 On Whiteout Weekend 
Tickets for the annual whiteout game against Plattsburgh sold out within the three hours of the box office opening the week before the Feb. 4 game. The excitement of the biggest game of the year rang throughout the air. All across campus students wore their white shirts and by the time 3 p.m. rolled around, fans were lining the interior of the Marano Campus Center to secure themselves a seat to see the annual rivalry game unfold.

Oswego State Athletics Programs Earn NADIIIAA/JOSTENS Community Service Awards
The National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) presented Oswego State Athletics with two first place awards out of three categories for the NADIIIAA/JOSTENS Community Service Awards, given at the NCAA Convention on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. Wrestler Sean Maloney '17 – at the convention representing 5,000 student-athletes of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) – was on hand to accept one award while Director of Athletics Sue Viscomi accepted the other.
